We learned of a problem with one of our prospects where their process required steam for pharmaceutical and medical processes. Infinity Fluids patented steam heaters require a fraction of the space of a standard steam generator and use much less energy. These heaters operate from an Off position and produce steam within 48 seconds. The Infinity heater design consists of a large heater surface at low watt density that quickly and efficiently transfers the heat. These heaters are used for “clean and pure” steam processes.
While visiting a customer to discuss a potential project I learned they had an issue with premature IR heater failures in another department. The heaters were lasting only 3 days. After reviewing the design of their system, we recommended a different quartz IR heater for high temperatures, +/- 900˚C, and a phase angle control system designed to control fast responding heaters. The system has now been operating for several years with consistent, successful, results and no heater failures.
One of our customers was applying a protective layer of very thin plastic sheeting to protect their product in shipment. The process needed a small amount of heat in order for the film to stick to the product. We installed a bank of IR heaters and an infrared temperature sensor to measure the temperature of the sheet. This process required two controllers, a cascade system. One to measure the temperature of the sheet and the other to control the heaters. Direct control of the heaters would result in temperature variations. The process has been operating for several years with continuing success and no maintenance issues.
While visiting a customer to discuss a potential heater process to dry a fabric and polymer material designed for industrial applications. Although a single pass air heater would perform this task the energy cost would be excessive. We supplied them with a Gruenberg conveyor oven that we modified with a multiple loop system to run the material though the oven several times. Due to lack of floor space we installed the oven vertically, quite an unusual installation. After several years the system continues to operate successfully.
While installing an air heater system at a customer’s factory we burned out several heaters. With the assistance of an Athena Controls engineer we reviewed the system and brought several heaters into the Athena lab for testing. As a result, Athena re-designed the controller to update every 100 ms and changed the control algorithm. The design changes now allow control of very fast air heater, and IR heater processes +/-1˚ at 1,000˚ F.
One of our customers stated they had a problem with their metering valves of molten metal. After the process stopped the valves became frozen and it was then difficult to warm them to a temperature where they could then function. HTS/Amptek designed a custom heater in an insulated enclosure to warm the valve and melt the frozen metal. HTS/Amptek designs and manufactures flexible heaters and insulated enclosures for processes up to 1,400F.
